Q: What are the benefits of ISO in an organization and business and are there any drawbacks with having ISO. Where is ISO mostly used, and where do the procedures come into play.

The benefits of ISO 9001 certification include consistency of processes, accountability and a higher-level view of the organization and its measures. The only drawback is that there is time involved and resources required to maintain the systems properly. As to where procedures are used, there are only 6 procedures required by the standard. Other procedures are identified and implemented based on your organization's need to control your processes.

Q: 4.2.3 Control of Documents (f) to ensure that documents of external origin are identified and their distribution is controlled, Can you explain this to me or give me example how you may cover this?

External documents vary type of industry, but usually refer to customer drawings, specs, outside standards (including the ISO 9001 standard), manuals, etc., that your receive from either customers or other external sources. For those documents that have a direct bearing on the quality of your product or service, they need to be controlled. Many companies have a single point of contact, who maintains a list of what documents are in-house, their locations, and dates or revisions as applicable. If there is a large volume of these types of documents in your company, you may choose departmental representatives to keep track. Just like other document control criteria, this is really intended to ensure (to your customers) that you are maintaining control of requirements so that your employees have the most current document.

Q: We are a very small co interested in installing medical equip. The manufacturer requires OSI cert but we aren't familiar with OSI in any way. We don't have an IT person, so will your product teach dummies or will we need to find an IT person?

A: To start with it might be helpful for you to view our Free Video entitled Introduction to ISO 9000 which will give you a basic understanding about what ISO 9001 requires. You can also review this brief article: What is ISO 9000?. Incidentally, ISO 9001 is not related to IT and so you shouldn't need an IT person for this initiative.

A: Yes. A procedure for "Monitoring and Measuring Devices" is included in the "ISO 9001 Procedure Package" (the product that you are currently looking at).

A "Calibration Form" is included in our ISO 9001 Form Package.

Both of these items are included in our ISO 9001 Documentation Kit.
